So you think that classic photographs from an enlarger and processing with photo paper and chemicals yields a superior picture compared to digital?
In many ways you are correct and in some you are not.
You will get a higher quality, better definition photograph. A photograph that is hand made in small quantities has a particular sense of pride and craftsmanship that has been lost in the digital world. I know that when I get a 'Classic' photograph from someone, that a lot of work went into it and that there are only a small quantity of these hand made ultimate quality photographs in existance.
Better quality, hand made craftmanship, archival qualities, a feel, texture and look all its own and better than any digital image. This is all true as long as the person in the darkroom is a seasoned professional. Otherwise the digital darkroom may be for you.
Maybe, just maybe, they can co-exist? Do your proofs and cropping on digital. Make your snapshots of the family dog on digital. Send your images over E-Mail and attach them to your web-site. Then when the creative mood strikes and you want to hang that perfect picture on your living room wall, you bust out the chemicals and head into your classic darkroom. Mix up your chemicals, fire up the enlarger and let the creative juices flow and within days you have that handmade masterpiece that you can show of proudly to all of your friends and relatives. Something to hand down to the grandchildren with pride. The ultimate quality made from your very hands. One of a kind.
