Leica Meters A Selection of Leica Meters
Leica Meter MR-4/Leica Meter MC/Metrophot MF-L/Leica Meter 2 Only the Leica CL, Minolta CLE, Leica M5 and Leica M6 had built in Metering. All other cameras rely on brain power, external metering or coupled external metering. The meters shown above mount to the accesory shoe of the Leica camera. The two models on the far left couple to the shutter dial to provide an even simpler means of calculating exposure. The device pictured on top center is a low light booster that attaches to the meter alllowing increased sensativity in low light situations. Most Leica photographers prefer to calculate their own exposures based on experience. Others can use an external meter like the ones pictured above (small and light). The Leica MR-4 was the latest variant of the Leica meter, utilizing a battery to power the CDS cell, it was considered to be the best of the bunch. All other meters used a selenium cell that required no battery. However, these selenium celled meters, unless perfectly sealed (most are not), tend to stop working after 20 years or so. Every now and then you can find a good working example. They are worth finding in that they do not need a battery to operate. I find that calculating your own exposures is rewarding in its own right and provides a more seamless experience in picture taking allowing you to focus on creativity and composition rather than focusing on dials and trying to determine if your meter is exposing correctly.
