Rarity Ratings Rarity ratings can be determined by two factors.  How many were produced and how many are for sale.  Some items are made in sufficient quantity, but Leica enthusiasts simply will not part with them.  This can make an item Rare to find, but not necessarily Rare in numbers produced.  Other items are made in small quantities.  The Rarest in 10's, 100's & Low 1000's.  Let me also state that there are Leica items that may be different than the ones currently listed in many texts by the experts.  Leica equipment was built entirely by hand assembly, some parts on cameras can be intermixed (the M6 Panda or M3 Type 2 with triangular straplugs after the predisposed SN# are good examples) or special alterations made for customers or special parties.  I have seen Leica items that are not described in any text but certainly exist in their non-altered state as it left the Leica factory.  Two places of manufacture/assembly and all done by Poeple.  This lends itself to inevitable alterations and non conformity and you never know what you might run accross that has never been located by the experts.  This is one of the reasons that Leica collecting is so appealing.  So always keep a sharp eye out for the etraordinary.
