ZION Narrows

Zion is a little known but fantastic place for photographers.  For myself, Zion is more interesting than Yosemite.  The narrows is one of many places in Zion.  The narrows is a  huge slot canyon, 12 miles long, that moves along the Virgin river in Utah.  Expect to see towering cliffs, 1000 feet high and canyon walls only 15-30 feet accross.  Spectacular viewpoints are at every turn.  This hike is completely through water!  Thats right 12 miles of hiking through a river.  It is strenuous.  Take plenty of water and food and don't get caught in the canyon at night fall.  You can hike the narrows from the bottom up  or from the top down.  The top down hike is best done in two days (but can be done in summer in 12 hours if you move fast and are physically/mentally fit)  and you will need to get a permit at the Ranger Station in advance.  The bottom up hike will allow you to get to the middle of the narrows and back in one days time and requires no permit.  Try the bottom up hike first and the top down the next time.  The water ranges in height from a couple of inches to a few feet, so depending on the water flow of the canyon be prepared to be up to your neck in water.  This means water proof bags for your camera gear.  They are available at most sports shops.  Also remember that it is highly likely that you will slip/fall at least once.  I have smashed two cameras so far in the narrows, but I still keep going back with more cameras to sacrafice to the canyon.  There are also guided tours available from:

I have done this hike several times.  Even if you do not take the guided tour, it is highly recommended that you stop by the Adventure Company on your way into the park and check river flow rates and rent a pair of special river shoes and a walking stick.  You will need these items and your trip will be much more enjoyable.

The narrows is only one of many places in Zion.  One trip to Zion is never enough.  There are many more slot canyons in this area as well as amazing vistas from hikes like Angel's Landing.  Zion is also a gateway to Bryce Canyon and the North rim of the Grand Canyon.

Zion is located near Springdale, Utah.  Use the link above for directions to the park.  This is a must see for any Photographer, but keep it a secret because this park has not been ruined yet by overuse like Yosemite has.  Believe me when I tell you that you will remember this hike for the rest of your life!
